To the east of the Cordillera Negra, descending to around 3000 m.a.s.l., the colourful Callejon de Huaylas Valley spreads out, with picturesque and pleasant towns like Recuay, Carhuaz, Yungay, and Caraz, while the urban and commercial centre of the area is the capital of Ancash, the energetic city of Huaraz.
