Climbing up from the coast of Ancash the landscape starts changing into the green countryside of the highlands. From the highest pass at 4200 m.a.s.l. a spectular reward appears: the best view of the Cordillera Blanca with snowy peaks of more than 6000 meters, at 5100 m.a.s.l. this is the maximum altitude of this range. In the Cordillera Negra we find Pre-Inka Trails, the tall Puya de Raimondi flower to the north in Winchus Punta and villages like Shupluy and Matacoto with excellent views of Huascaran, the highest peak of Peru.

It is the biggest rock climbing area in Peru with more than 250 sport climbing routes of all levels and the perfect place for a hike between the strange stone formations and 8000 – years old unique paintings of the petrified wood. Excellent view of both the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash and lodging and camping facilities.
Paragliding: Flying from the Cordillera Negra is safer, being the best spots Wilkacocha Lake and Quitapampa.
