Hatun Machay (which means ‘Big Cave’ in Quechua) is truly one of the most impressive geological attractions in the Ancash region, situated in the Black Mountain Range at 4200 m above sea level. This immense rock forest is the largest rock climbing centre in Peru and spans over 200 hectares in total. There is an extensive variety of sport route levels, from novice to tricky technical routes, to hard core routes for seasoned climbers. There are also plenty of boulders for those who prefer to stay closer to the ground and travel light! Walking around the site you can stumble across caves, ruins, stone carvings and cave paintings dating back 10,000 years. Hatun Machay also offers mountain biking, trekking, horsebackriding and archaeological and mystical tours. There is a refuge which sleeps up to 50 people (bunk beds or camping) and offers kitchen, hot shower and bathroom facilities.
