Trekking Difficulties

It doesn’t exist an International scale to graduate the difficulty of a route, but Infinite Adventures wanted to categorize the routes in 3 grades: easy, moderate and difficult. These 3 grades are based on many aspects such as maximal elevation of the passes, duration, distance walked per day, incline of the slopes towards the passes, altitude of the campsites, number of nights in campsites, range of ages who has tried the route quite often etc…

This is a very subjective scale which is not only based on the difficulty of the route but also in the physical condition and experience of the participants. It is very important that the person have a medical exam before the trekking, especially a heart examination. Remember that the time walked per day depends on the physical condition of the participants.

EASY: Trekking of 1 to 5 days, in elevations between 3200 to 4700 m. The slopes towards the passes are quite flat, 10 to 20 degrees. The campsites can be between 3800 to 4200 m.; approximately walked distance per day is from 4 to 8 km. If there is a day with a longer distance, the slope is flat or is all way down. 0 – 4 nights sleeping at campsites between 3200 to 4700 m. These routes are very popular and visited by people from 13 to 70 years old or more.

The people who want to try this level should have certain physical condition and experience, like 1 day – treks of 2 to 6 hours or normal training in a gym or walking or running around a park. It is better if the participants like to go camping or have a bit of experience in camping, because for some people can be very hard to sleep in a sleeping bag on a foam on the hard ground and this issue can bring other health problems.

MODERATE: Trekking from 1 to 6 days, in elevations between 3500 to 5000 meters. The slopes towards some passes could be more than 20 degrees. The campsites are from 3800 to 4300; approximately walked distance per day is from 4 to 16 km. 0 – 5 nights sleeping at campsites between 3800 to 4700 m. These routes are quite popular and visited between people from 18 to 70 year old or more in good shape and experienced.

The people who want to try this level should have a good physical condition and experience in some trekkings of the easy level. It is better if the participants like to go camping or have a bit of experience in camping in the altitude.

DIFFICULT: Trekkings from 1 to 15 days or more, in elevations between 3500 to 5000 m. The slopes towards some passes could be more than 20 degrees. The campsites are from 3800 to 4400; approximately walked distance per day is from 8 to 20 km. 0 – 14 nights or more sleeping at campsites between 3800 to 4400 m. These routes are quite popular and visited between people from 18 to 70 year old or more in very good shape and very experienced.

The people who want to try this level should have a good physical condition and experience in some trekkings of the easy level and if it’s possible of the moderate level. It is better if the participants like to go camping and have a lot of experience in camping in the altitude.

Note: This a very subjective scale based also on many years of guiding in this terrain. If you are not sure of which level is recommended to you, feel free to fill our evaluation form. Please be honest, your health depends on this. If you decide to try a trek higher than the recommended level, you need to sign a letter of responsibility.
